It often happens that you update a plugin and your site either goes down or you see the white screen or some other plugins stop working. At that time, you just want to go back. But how? Here are three ways, you can roll back an update of the plugin.
Method 1: Use the WP Rollback Plugin
1. Install & Activate WP Rollback Plugin
- • Go to Plugins > Add New
- Search for WP Rollback
- Install and activate the plugin
2. Rollback the Plugin Version
- • Go to Plugins > Installed Plugins
- Find the plugin you want to rollback
- Click Rollback (next to the Deactivate button)
- Select the version you want to revert to
- Click Rollback again and confirm
✅ Best for: Non-technical users who want a quick and safe rollback.
Method 3: Manually Downgrade the Plugin
- Go to WordPress Plugin Repository
- Search for the plugin
- Click Advanced View (right sidebar)
- Scroll down to the Previous Versions section
- Download the older version you need
- Upload & Replace the Plugin
- Go to Plugins > Installed Plugins
- Deactivate & Delete the plugin
- Go to Plugins > Add New > Upload Plugin
- Upload the older version’s ZIP file
- Activate the plugin
✅ Best for: If the rollback plugin doesn’t support your specific plugin.
Method 4: Restore from a Backup (If the Plugin Breaks Your Site)
If updating the plugin broke your site and you can’t access WordPress:
- Log into Your Hosting Control Panel (cPanel, Plesk, etc.)
- Restore a backup (via hosting backup or a plugin like UpdraftPlus)
- If no backup is available, delete the plugin folder manually:
- Use File Manager (cPanel) or FTP
- Go to wp-content/plugins/
- Delete the folder of the problematic plugin
✅ Best for: When a plugin update causes a critical error and locks you out.
Precaution: Disable Auto-Updates for That Plugin
After rolling back, disable automatic updates to prevent future issues:
Go to Plugins > Installed Plugins
Click Disable Auto-Updates next to the plugin
